Our Father in Heaven

Hosea 11:1-11; Matthew 6:1-8

We live in a world spiritually tugged in two extreme and opposite directions.

On one hand, best-seller lists include books that argue we've outgrown the need for theistic projection. They claim the very idea of God is simply wishful thinking by psychologically immature people who want or need a Daddy so much they invent a Deity to fill the gap.

On the other hand, hundreds of thousands have been dying in a brutal clash between competing theologies. Religious extremists square off in the name of one God or another, like overgrown playground kids desperately chanting, "My God can beat up your God!"

Jesus prescribed the antidote to both spiritual sicknesses long ago, when he began the Lord's Prayer with two key words to name the God we pray to: "Our Father who art in Heaven...."

God as Father cares about us, and cares for us, with an intimate family kind of love. And God in Heaven has infinite power to accomplish whatever that love desires or requires.

I begin and end this week's message with the story of a worrisome recurring dream I had for several years. It was about my own dad, long after he had died believing with all his heart that God was his Father in Heaven. I think you'll find it interesting. I hope you'll find it helpful.
