Why Not Worry?
Psalm 107:1-3, 23-29; Matthew 14:22-23
My favorite stained glass window in our Sanctuary features Jesus walking on the water during a violent midnight storm on the Sea of Galilee. Not only that, but he's reaching down to grasp the flailing hand of Peter and hold him fast against taking the deep six.
Totally awesome.
How did Peter wind up out there sputtering in the sea? Not by being tossed out of the disciples' boat by some tricky wave. He simply stepped out of the boat and walked on the water himself, heading straight for Jesus.
Equally awesome in every way. Even more so, when you think about it.
Jesus, after all, is The. God. Man. By definition, he specializes in miracles. Feed 5,000 here with a bit o' bread and fish. Raise the dead there with a simple command. So then, why not do some surfing the hard way, hanging ten without a board?
But Peter? You? Me?
Mulling all this over on my way to Sunday's sermon, I came across a wonderful explanation* of how Peter pulled it off. Well, only so far -- until he thought to himself, "Hey! This is impossible!! Nobody can walk on water!!!" And down he went.
Down, but not out. Because -- ah well, just take a few minutes now and...
