San Francisco Bay Area Chamber Choir
Utterly English
Choral Music of Britten, Rutter, Howells, et al
Saturday, April 12, 2008 at 7:00 p.m.


The San Francisco Bay Area Chamber Choir, conducted by David Stein, performs music written by English composers from the early to the late 20th century. Two compositions to be performed with secular texts include the "Hymn to St. Cecilia" by Benjamin Britten and "Seven Poems of Robert Bridges" by Gerald Finzi. Other works on the program utilize sacred texts: "Three Latin Motets" by Charles Villiers Stanford, Herbert Howells' "Requiem" and John Rutter's "Cantate Domino." Click here for details.

The Regina Monologues—A festive evening of Elizabethan Madrigals and folksongs, music for lute, and readings from Shakespeare. Music of Ravenscroft, Lawes, Dowland, Morley, Byrd and Gibbons, including a song about some very feisty cats who reside in London's Temple Bar. San Francisco Renaissance Voices returns for their second appearance at Music at First Pres, including lutenist Scott Shubeck—also a Music at First Pres veteran and one of our Christmas Eve musical guests—and Dianne Nicolini, announcer on KDFC classical radio 102.1 FM. They don't just stand and sing for us, they wear period costumes and their semi-staged performances capture the vitality of the music and its time. Click here for details.
